In the first match of the semi-finals of the English football League Cup Newcastle United was defeated as a guest Southampton at 1-0 (0-0).
The only goal of the match was scored by Joelinton in the 73rd minute.

Duje Ćaleta-Car was sent off for Southampton in the 86th minute due to a second yellow card, while Mislav Oršić played for the home side until the 57th minute.
The return is in a week in Newcastle.
The other semi-final pair consists of Nottingham Forest and Manchester United, who will play their first meeting on Wednesday.
The final is scheduled for February 26.
