The EU Parliament has appointed a Luxembourg social democrat to succeed the Deputy President of the Parliament, who was dismissed due to allegations of corruption Eva Kaili chosen. A majority of MEPs voted in favor in Strasbourg on Wednesday Marc Angel as the new Vice President of the European Parliament. The 59-year-old belongs to the same faction as Kaili before she was expelled from the party family.

Angel was one of three candidates. The French Gwendoline Delbos-Corfield ran for the Greens, and the Italian Annalisa Tardino for the right-wing populist ID faction. In Kaili’s place, Angel will now be one of 14 vice-presidents of the parliament. He has been an MEP since 2019.

Kaili dropped in December

The European Parliament dismissed Kaili with an overwhelming majority in December shortly after allegations of corruption against the 44-year-old and other suspects became known. The Greek politician and three other suspects are accused of money laundering and corruption. The Gulf State Train such as Morocco are said to have tried to influence decisions in the European Parliament. Both countries reject this.

SPÖ-EU Head of Delegation Andreas Schieder and Vice-President of the European Parliament Evelyn Regner congratulated Angel in a broadcast. “We are convinced that he will carry out this office in the best interests of European citizens. It is particularly important now that this post is filled by a person who is trustworthy and has integrity, who can shape progressive politics with us and work with us to achieve more transparency,” said the two Social Democrats.
