The health condition of Matteo Messina Denaro, the notorious mafia boss arrested on Monday and suffering from cancer, is “serious”. That says a doctor from the Sicilian hospital where the man was arrested after 30 years on the run.

“His health condition is serious. The disease has gained momentum in recent months,” Vittori Gebbia, head of the oncology department at the Maddalena Clinic in Palermo, told La Repubblica daily.

Messina Denaro, a fugitive for 30 years, was Italy’s most wanted mafioso. He was regarded as one of the leaders of the Cosa Nostra, the Sicilian mafia. Denaro underwent surgery for colon cancer in 2020 and 2022.

Denaro has already been sentenced to life in absentia for the 1992 murder of judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. Those two judges were known for prosecuting mafiosi. He also received a life sentence for bombings in Florence, Rome and Milan, which killed ten people in 1993.

In addition, the mafia boss is also said to have been involved in kidnapping, torturing and finally killing the boy Giuseppe Di Matteo for two years. He was murdered and dissolved in acid because his father had testified against the mafia.

Although he had been a fugitive since 1993, the police believed that Massina Denaro was still able to control the mafia.
