The writing is estimated to date possibly even from the beginning of our modern era, around the year one.

From Norway the oldest rune stone in the world so far has been found near Oslo. The inscription on the square sandstone, which is about 30 centimeters on its edge, is estimated to date from before the year 250, possibly even from the beginning of our modern era around the year one.

The discovery made in autumn 2021 was reported in Norway on Tuesday. The stone is called Svingerud’s stone after the exact place it was found.

Archaeologists were able to estimate the stone’s age by radiocarbon dating because the runestone was found in a grave with bones and charcoal.

One word “idiberug” stands out from the inscriptions on the stone. Researchers don’t know what the word exactly means. For example, it could be the name of a person who was in the grave.

Until now, it has been believed that the first runic stones were written sometime around 300-400.
