An apparently serial burglar was caught today trying to steal Christmas presents from the Manhattan home of actor Robert De Niro, New York police said.
Officers followed the offender, whose name has not been released, due to suspicion that she is the perpetrator of a series of recent robberies, and saw her break into the house around 2:45 a.m. local time, the statement added.
Inside, they found a 30-year-old woman “attempting to remove property” in the living room, and arrested her.
De Niro (79), who was upstairs, went down to the living room and found the scene of the arrest.
The actor’s spokesman announced that De Niro would not make statements about the attempted robbery.
The police said that the basement door, through which the woman entered the actor’s house, showed signs of being forced open.
De Niro’s spokesman said the house is not his, but he is renting it.
